The National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center, spearheaded by the Beijing Microcore Blockchain and Edge Computing Research Institute, has officially commenced operations. With the Ministry of Science and Technology’s approval, the center is primed to become an integral part of China’s strategic blockchain technology push, aiming to conquer key core technologies and accelerate industrialization.

Collaborative Approach to Blockchain Innovation

In order to address the challenges in the blockchain field, the National Blockchain Innovation Center will collaborate with prominent domestic universities, research institutes, and leading enterprises. This joint effort aims to achieve breakthroughs in foundational and cutting-edge key core technologies, transforming major basic research accomplishments into a vital support system for the national digital infrastructure.

The center’s primary focus lies in blockchain basic theory, key software and hardware technologies, basic platforms and verification networks, and common platforms and services. By cultivating open, underlying blockchain platform and generating high-level original scientific and technological achievements, the center aims to serve major national and public welfare scenarios, enhance the core competitiveness of the blockchain field, and establish a national strategic force in China’s blockchain industry.

Microcore Research Institute Aims to Deliver Blockchain Innovation

To ensure a steady flow of innovation, the National Blockchain Innovation Center will explore enterprise-led industry-academia-research joint tackling mechanisms, introduce world-class scientific and technological leaders, and promote open sharing of innovation resources. The center also plans to expand international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges, ultimately creating an innovative network that connects global resources.

The Microcore Research Institute has played a pivotal role in the development of the National Blockchain Innovation Center. As the lead organization, Microcore has successfully created China’s first independently controllable blockchain software and hardware technology system, known as “Chang’an Chain.” The Chang’an Chain has been applied to numerous critical industries and key areas within the national economy, such as national tax services, trusted digital identity systems, government services, and supply chain finance.

Overcoming the “Blockchain Islands” Phenomenon

China’s blockchain technology has witnessed rapid growth, with the emergence of multiple “application chains.” However, the uneven quality of underlying technologies, fragmented technical ecosystems, and self-governing nature of different blockchain application platforms have led to the “blockchain islands” phenomenon, which has hindered the digital economy’s high-quality development. The National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center aims to combat these challenges by focusing on key technology breakthroughs, industrial applications, and high-level national blockchain main chain construction.

The National Blockchain Innovation Center will work towards constructing large-scale blockchain computing clusters and a national blockchain computing network. Comprised of provincial and municipal backbone node networks and industry application node networks, this robust digital infrastructure will serve important industries and key areas of the national economy, such as cross-border trade, supply chain finance, energy, safety production, and the food industry.

With an ambitious goal of training over 500,000 high-quality talents in the blockchain field, the center will join forces with top universities, research institutes, and leading enterprises. This effort will cater to the rapidly developing digital economy patterns, such as Web3.0, and contribute to the construction of a digital powerhouse in China.

Addressing the “Bottleneck” Problem in Blockchain Technology

The National Blockchain Innovation Center, under the leadership of Director Dong Jin, is determined to tackle the “bottleneck” problem of blockchain underlying technology in multiple fields, such as chips and underlying architecture. By ensuring data security and trustworthiness, the center aims to lay a solid foundation for the nation’s digital economy security.

The Chang’an Chain has made significant strides on a global scale, completing node deployments in 15 major countries across four continents. This international expansion has enabled numerous Chinese companies to deeply participate in the global industrial division of labor and enhance their competitiveness.

Zheng Zhiming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at the School of Mathematics and Systems Science at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, believes that the establishment of the National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center will significantly improve the innovation capabilities and core competitiveness of the blockchain industry. By focusing on key technology breakthroughs, industrial applications, and high-level national blockchain main chain construction, the center will play a crucial role in fostering the digital economy’s growth.

The Future of Blockchain Innovation in China

The National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center’s launch marks a new era in China’s blockchain technology advancement. With a strong emphasis on collaboration, key technological breakthroughs, and talent cultivation, the center is poised to drive innovation and establish a national strategic force in China’s blockchain industry.

As blockchain continues to grow as an important information infrastructure in global fields such as data transactions, financial settlements, international trade, and government services, the National Blockchain Innovation Center is well-positioned to serve as a vital engine for the development of the global digital economy. By fostering an environment that nurtures innovation, the center will contribute significantly to the progress of blockchain technology, both within China and worldwide.
