The Facebook Company has rebranded to Meta. Here’s what that means, and what was announced in their Meta event.
Facebook kicked off its event by launching meta, the new name of the company that owns Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Oculus. Facebook also announced that it would be changing its ticker on the NYSE from $fb to $mvrs, further centralizing the company. The separate entities’ names will not be changing, however, i.e. the app facebook itself will remain named Facebook.
“The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future.” -Meta
The timing is questionable since the tech giant is currently in the middle of a pr firestorm, but the conglomerate has stated that it plans to focus its sights on the Metaverse as a whole, to create a more cohesive user experience.
