Tesla is best known for its electric vehicles, but the firm is also active in the booming business of battery storage. Following the power shortage in Texas stemming from unnaturally cold weather and snow, it has been found that Tesla has begun production of a 100 MW battery system under the subsidiary called Gambit Energy Storage LLC. After Tesla and SpaceX’s expansion into Texas, this battery system is likely to be used to power car factories and SpaceX’s testing facility, allowing them to remain off of Texas’ electric grid.

Consisting of 20 Rectangular batteries and located an hour from Houston, the 100 MW battery is set to be operational on June 1st, implying it to be near fully constructed. For more information about the secretive project, see this article by arstechnica.
